Overview

Daily Nigde Tour (Private Only)

Nigde is an old city on the southern outskirts of Cappadocia with several exceptional historic buildings and, on its outskirts, a striking Byzantine troglodyte monastery. If your interest lies in ancient architecture then this day tour is for you! The rock-hewn monastery of Eski Gumusler is 10 km east from Nigde. The Alaattin Mosque (1223), a Seljuk work on the hill with a fortress and clock tower, is the town’s grandest mosque.

Among the historical buildings of Nigde, Sungur Bey Mosque is one of the most fascinating one, built by the Seljuks but used extensively by the Mongols, of all people. The Ak Medrese (1409) is in post-Seljuk, quasi-Mongol style. We will also visit the museum, which houses the mummified remains of a blonde Byzantine nun of the 900s discovered in the church-filled Ihlara Valley. Then we visit ruins of Tyana Ancient City which is located at the village of Kemerhisar. In later times the city was the seat of a bishop, and it was an important staging point in the Crusaders' march south. This is also the site of Hittite Tuwanuwa but most evidence of the 2nd and 1st millennia BC occupation was destroyed by Roman building activities. We also visit the ancient pool where Cleopatra swam.
